Discours d’ouverture du Clean Up the World - le 15 septembre 2018

Dear Greg Liddell, (General Manager of the Mandarin Oriental),
Dear Thomas Gal, CEO of TEE Thailand,
Dear friends from the Mandarin Oriental, TEE Thailand, Amadeus, Hermes, Mahidol University and Bangkok University,
Dear colleagues from the French Embassy,
Dear participants,

On behalf of the French Embassy in Thailand, I would like to express a warm welcome to the participants at this second edition of the Clean Up the World in Bangkok.

As you know plastic pollution is an issue without borders and with devastating ecological consequences especially for the ocean.

Thailand contributes to this pollution and as we live in Bangkok, it’s our responsibility to improve our behaviors regarding the consumption of single use plastic objects and to raise awareness on the plastic pollution issue.

Considering the geographical location of the French Embassy, next to the Chao Phraya, we decided to move forward to reduce the use of plastic.

This is why, at the French Embassy in Thailand, we are involved in the “Green Embassy” project. Launched in 2015, this project is a global and progressive approach to reduce the ecological footprint of French diplomatic missions abroad.

More generally, the French government has recently committed to replacing single use plastics objects (straw, cotton bud, cup, plate) with sustainable products by 2020 and to recycling 100% of the plastic used in France by 2025.

In order to reach this goal we raise awareness among embassy staff, we reduce the use of plastic bottles and plastic bags, we will sign a pledge on combatting plastic pollution and, of course, we participate to the Clean Up the World today !

I would like to thank all the partners of this great event, especially the Mandarin Oriental which has done an excellent work, and TEE Thailand. I would also like to thank the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, the members of the Bangkok eco-capitals Forum and Bangkok Rivers and all the economic partners.

I wish you all a very meaningful and enjoyable Clean Up. Thank you very much.
